Should English be Kansas' official language?

A new bill making English the official language of Kansas has Rep. Bill Owens spittin' mad.

Read this CJ column on it. It seems he thinks it would make us snooty like French people who refuse to speak in other people's language while serving them.

I think it's poor form to discourage aliens to our land from learning the language necessary for success. If you care for people and want them to succeed around here, what's so impolite about encouraging them to become a part of our country by learning its language? Language ties us together—otherwise we have those who speak English and those who speak Spanish. That's not a good formula. How many successful Americans are there that can't speak English?
